Hi Friends!
After taking some time off, I’m back in full swing with track season. I had my first meet this past weekend where I ran the 1500m and 800m events. I felt pretty strong and am happy to be training with my teammates again. You can see my results here. Now that I’ve moved up to the 11-12 yo age division, I am hoping that my teammates will be interested in doing some 4x400m relays. I’ve always wanted to do that 🙂
Here’s a short video from last night’s practice. We did MANY of these in addition to stadiums and 200m repeats. It was fun!
In between sets… My thoughts? Every attempt is an opportunity. GO!
See ya!
Watching this race gives me gOoSeBuMpS. Heather Dorniden is so inspiring.
Her coach once told her, “Sometimes you don’t know if you have a next year or even a tomorrow, so just go out there and run it the best you can.”
Sounds like good advice to me. And that is what she did.
For the past 2 weeks, my little sister Mia started coming to our team’s cross country practices. She wanted to try it out and maybe even do a race as a SoCal Roadrunner! As a 6 year old, she would be racing in the Sub-Bantam (7-8 yr olds) division.
I was so excited when she decided to race this weekend. She was really nervous but she figured out how to get through it on her own. She even managed to take 10th place! I’m so proud of her!
Here is a video of her race:

~ Bill Rodgers
Last Friday, Bill Rodgers was in town visiting and I was lucky enough to have a chance to meet him. He won the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon four times.
He is 63 years old and still runs almost every day. In fact, he told me he ran 11 miles that morning. That’s almost half a marathon!
I thought he was very nice and encouraging. He told me to keep running smoothly and to enjoy every minute. I appreciated the time he spent talking with me. I hope to experience running a marathon myself one day.
Here is a video of Bill Rodgers during the 1979 Boston Marathon finish where he set a course record, an American record and ran his personal best time of 2:09.27.
I went to Six Flags Magic Mountain for the second time in a month on New Year’s Eve. I met two of my best friends, John and Tyler there. We are so close, we call ourselves “blood brothers.”
They had never been to Six Flags before so they were very excited. I couldn’t wait to ride the rides with them. We had a special flash pass that day that gave us very special privileges. We didn’t have to wait in any lines AND we got to ride the rides twice in a row!
Over winter break I did a research project on the science of rollercoasters. What I learned was so fascinating that it made going back to the park and riding the rides that much more fun. I will be presenting my research to my class soon and will post some of it here soon 🙂
My favorite ride at Six Flags is TATSU. Oh my gosh, it is the BEST!! You feel like you are flying.
I also love Goliath and Scream. There are so many great rides at the park. I am so glad we have season passes and can go back often!

Wow. One of the highlights of my time in Alabama was getting to meet Chris Solinsky. He is the US 10,000m record holder and came to speak at opening ceremonies. I learned at his speech that he did not start off as a very good runner. In his first race, he came in last place. Then he made a decision to never come in last again. He worked really really hard and became an amazing runner.
On May 2, 2010, Solinsky competed in the 10,000m for the first time at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford University. Not only did he win the race in an amazing 26 minutes, 59.60 seconds, but he also shattered by more than 14 seconds the previous American record for that distance of 27:13.98 set by Meb Keflezighi on the same track on May 4, 2001.
His performance was the second-fastest in the world in 2010, and he became the first non-African to break the 27-minute barrier! He is a five-time NCAA champion and a gold medalist at the the Pan American Games. He was also the 2002 Foot Locker Cross Country champion while attending high school in Wisconsin. He won that race by 20 seconds, tying the largest margin of victory in race history.
He was also the Wisconsin HS state champion in the 3200 as a sophomore, junior and senior, breaking the state record as a junior in 8:58.39.
THIS IS AN INDIVIDUAL I AM WATCHING 🙂
It was such a pleasure to meet him. He was so very nice and encouraging. His talk was amazing and he even started the Bantam Boys (my division) race the next morning.
This is an amazing video of his very first 10,000m race where he sets the American record:
Yesterday morning, NBC News San Diego came to my school to highlight our parent-run running club. A lot of runners, including myself, showed up at 5am for the tapings. It was completely black outside and FREEZING!
I have been coughing a bit this week and the cold air kind of made me cough a lot more 🙁 I don’t know if I am coming down with something because I NEVER get sick… Anyway, I was very excited about my school being on the news.
The reporter’s name was Megan Tevrizian. She was really nice and she interviewed a bunch of us to learn more about our running club. She even did a little bit of running with us. This year is is our school’s goal to “Run Around the World.” That is equal to 24,901 miles! I think we can do it for sure.
Our running club is so amazing. I started running when I was 6 because of the running club. The moms that organize it are very supportive and great. I am so thankful for the club because it gave me the chance to realize how much I love run and to be strong and healthy.
