My Day with Puracyn

Hey Friends!

I had the BEST day today. I went up north to the San Gabriel Mountains where my Sponsor, Puracyn is headquartered. There, I spent the day filming for a video they are putting together. I met several members of the Puracyn family, who were all super nice and funny. We started in the mountain where Mic, the cameraman took footage of me running in the hilly trails.

Here he is giving me instructions on what to do:

Right before my first run, I spotted a giant black rattlesnake slithering across the trail into the bushes. It freaked me out and I had to do my best to block it out. It was so long, all you can see here is its mid-section:

I ended up having to do several takes running up a long, steep hill and I have to say, it was pretty tough. I ended up getting quite a workout!

I also had to memorize and say some lines. I’ve never done this before so it was a little scary since I didn’t have much time to learn the lines! I didn’t want to hold Mic up too much by messing up a lot so I immediately started cramming the script into my head. The good news is, I am generally good at memorizing things 🙂

We did a few more short runs and then taped me talking to the camera. I had to do this a lot of times, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Once we finished the speaking portion, we drove to the company founder’s ranch to do the rest of our filming. It was a really amazing place. There were dogs running free everywhere. They had a really beautiful pond with koi fish in it. I loved that I spotted a dragonfly whizzing around.

Mic picked a location for me to bike and then I got on the Puracyn bike for several takes! This was so fun because I had so much space to ride and the ranch was really pretty and peaceful.

Once Mic was happy with the biking footage, we moved on to the pool. It was a hot and sunny day so I thought, hey, that’s going to be so refreshing! However, the pool was not heated. In fact, the water was FREEZING!!! I’ve swam in really cold ocean temperatures without a wetsuit and always seem to be able to adjust to really cold temps but this pool seemed like the coldest I’d ever experienced. I had to wait a while for Mic to get his camera gear ready. Even though I wanted to get warm, I couldn’t resist the diving board. Every time I looked at it, I felt like I had to jump off it. So I did. And every time I came out of the water I would scream from the cold. Then I did it all over again.

After the swim portion, we were all done. I had such a great day and couldn’t imagine that it could get any better. But it did. On the ranch, they also had horse stables and a ring. When they heard that I had never been near a horse before, they asked if I’d like to take a tour of the stables. I said “Yeah!” When we got there, it was amazing. There were maybe a dozen stables with horses names on each door. The horses were really big and beautiful. It turned out that their very special and talented horse trainer was there and she asked if I would like to ride one. WHAAAA??? Um.. YEAH!! I couldn’t believe I was going to get to ride a horse right there.

The trainer’s name was Obbie and she was incredible. I thought she was going to hold onto the horse and walk him around with me. NO. She just gave me instructions of what to do and it was crazy. This was the most incredible thing. Me riding a horse for the first time.

Every time I got something down, she would stop and tell me something new to try. It was a jam-packed lesson. Hold the reins this way; kick with the opposite foot; give him a pat; lean that way; straighten your legs; make a clicking sound with your mouth at the same time… Oh my gosh, it was harder than learning the controls of a new DS game! But so fun!!! I eventually got “Dunny-Boy” to trot. That was awesome.

Wow, so after all that, it was almost 4pm and almost time for us to leave. We went to get cleaned up and load up the car with my gear and tons of Puracyn products (yeah!). Just before we left, Danielle, one of the team members, told us she wanted to show us something. So we followed her to another room and I couldn’t believe my ears and eyes. Everyone was singing happy birthday to me as they carried a cake full of candles. My birthday was a week ago and I have no idea how they even knew it had passed but I was really blown away. They made me feel so special all day long, it just kept getting better and better.

I had the most incredible day and experience- one that I will never forget, thanks to the Puracyn team. Here’s how the day ended:

I’ll be sure to post the video as soon as it’s ready!

Don’t just practice… Practice like a champ!

I read an awesome quote today by someone called, Coach K. He said,

“To have championship season, you have to have championship practices.”

I really really believe that is true. I’ve always thought that it doesn’t matter how many practices I go to, or how long I practice for. If I don’t bring my absolute best efforts TO the practice, I may as well not count it. Last year when I won the Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship, I knew in my heart that I didn’t just have a great race. I had great practices. Even though there were so many days when I didn’t feel like giving 100%, I always reminded myself what I wanted and why I was there in the first place.

I WANTED A CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON.

When I remember why I am there, it is much easier to dig deep and endure the challenges. Just last week, I had to do a hills workout in 90+ degree heat. I knew it was going to be painful. I had 3 hills to choose from and I picked the steepest, toughest one.

14 of these with a single 1-minute rest in the middle made for my championship practice.

Until next time– keep crushing it.

Pacific Coast Triathlon

This past Sunday I was in Laguna Niguel at Crystal Cove Park for the Pacific Coast Triathlon. It was the SoCal Youth Tri Series Championship race featuring slightly longer distances (which I love!)

The weather was great and I had a blast. The swim is my least favorite part because people are always bumping you and kicking because there are so many people bunched up together trying to get through the water. I just try to remain calm and do my best to manage not to get kicked in the face 🙂 This distance was very manageable at 300 yards.

The swim to bike transition was interesting. It was a pretty long and steep hill – I’d say at least 200m. I was probably the 8th or 9th swimmer out of the water, but I powered up to T1 and I think I was 2nd or 3rd entering the bike portion.

The bike had some big hills! It was 6 miles. By the time I reached the U-turn, I believe I was in the lead overall. There weren’t anymore youth athletes ahead of me and I started to catch some adults from the previous wave.

A smooth T2 led to the run which is my favorite part. I felt strong and enjoyed the mile and a half to the end. I pushed as though I were in last place and was happy to see my family at the finish line.

Based on my points earned in the entire series, I also captured the series championship. I am really excited about this because there is an organization (Medals 4 Mettle) which gives triathlon and marathon medals to patients who are fighting for their lives. I will be donating my medal and hope it will lift someone’s spirits even if it’s just a little.

Thanks for reading, NOW Friends!

Someone I watch and learn from..

Hello Friends!

My parents have always taught me to surround myself with positive people who inspire me. So I try to hang around people I admire. These people are friends, family members, authors, speakers, professional athletes, etc. I “hang around” them by spending time with them, reading their books, listening to them speak, or watching their videos.

Heather Jackson is one of these people. She’s a professional triathlete and a local hero of mine. Even though I only met her once, I do continue to read about her in news articles and follow her progress as a competitor.

This picture was taken earlier this year in May during a local triathlon we were both competing in. She spent a bit of time talking with me. I appreciated how encouraging she was and I also enjoyed watching her win the next morning.

This week I read an article about Heather on Triathlete.com. It talked about how she is competing in the Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Las Vegas this Sunday. I read that she has been doing some really intense training in Colorado for the past month to prepare. She seems super focused. I was surprised to read she lost 20 pounds in order to improve her run time. I also liked reading about how she’s been working on her mental training. Sometimes it seems like you can be the best athlete, but if you don’t believe you can do it, you can easily be beaten by other people who may not be as fast or as strong as you, but have a stronger mind. Even professionals continue to work on these skills.

I am so excited to see how her race goes on Sunday. I have also been doing a lot of cross-training and will be competing in a Socal Series Championship Triathlon on the same morning. I’m looking forward to the race and I definitely plan to go all out like Heather on race day!

Until next time, have an awesome weekend!

Triathletes ROCK.

Last weekend, I met a super cool, very inspiring, and incredible triathlete named John Hatala. He is a retired Marine who competes in various triathlons including IronMan and XTerra races. Since I love competing in triathlons, I was so excited to be able to ask Mr. Hatala questions about training, races, and expert tips.

I learned that he is the 2011 Western Region XTerra Champion. I had never heard of the XTerra races, and as he talked about them, my eyes got bigger and bigger. It’s basically an OFF-ROAD TRIATHLON where the run and bike is OFF-ROAD. That means like dirt, rocks, streams, and mountains.. and a DIRT BIKE! So cool.

I had no idea there were such competitions and now I have it on my list of things I want to do when I am old enough. Mr. Hatala had all kinds of stories from his experiences that really showed how brave and dedicated he is to the sport and to always improving.

He is a bike enthusiast so I learned about the importance of bike maintenance, weight considerations, and training methods. He talked about the importance of monitoring his heart rate during training so he could improve the efficiency of his heart muscle for endurance. He talked about pacing, nutrition, pre-race preparation.. so many things.

One time during a triathlon, he said he had a panic attack during the first few minutes of the swim. The water was freezing cold and it sort of took his breath away. He had pre-race nerves and when he entered the water, he found that he simply couldn’t move. So he floated onto his back and just slowly waved his arms back and forth to stay afloat until the panic attack went away and he was able to turn over and start swimming. I thought this was really amazing because he is a well-trained athlete and I learned that something like that can happen to anyone at anytime.

I was most grateful that he would take an hour and a half out of his weekend to talk and share tips with me. He said that triathletes as a community are pretty laid-back and enjoy a sense of comraderie(sp?). Just by sitting with me, I felt like I got to experience a piece of that community! Thank you, Mr. Hatala!!!!

2012 Encinitas Sprint Triathlon

Yesterday I did the Encinitas Sprint Triathlon at Moonlight Beach. It was my first non-youth triathlon with longer swim, bike, and run distances. It was also my first ocean swim. I was pretty nervous about the swim since I’d never really swam straight out into the ocean before. The water temperature was super cold, too. It was 60 degrees! Brrrrrrrrrrr..

I wasn’t planning on wearing a wetsuit because I don’t like having to take it off during transition, but at the last minute, I decided to wear one and I’m glad I did. I did a full body plunge into the water before the race and it took my breath away. I spent about 15 minutes jumping around in it until I started to get used to the temperature. Man was it COLD!!!

It was a 375m swim or a quarter-mile. Once the horn sounded I just went for it. Whenever I am in a big race or facing a really hard track practice, I always think of the Nike slogan: Just Do It. It will eventually be over and the sooner I finish, the sooner it will be done. Those three words always get me through whatever craziness I have to do.

So I bolted for the water, got in as far as I could before I had to actually swim, then started diving into the waves. It was choppy and there were a lot of people around me, but I just kept going. I am the weakest at swimming so I was really happy and relieved to have it behind me when I finally came back to shore.

Next was the bike. It was 10k or a little over 6 miles. My legs felt like they were red hot. It was a different kind of burn than I get from running.Halfway through the bike, I looked up and saw my friend’s dad riding alongside me. It was weird seeing someone I knew. He took some video of me with his phone, which you can see on the video of the race (below). Pretty cool!

My favorite part was the run. The triathlon runs are very different for me than my road races or track events. I think because you’ve already done a swim and bike, your body is in a different kind of state. When I run, it feels like I’m going at a “warm-up” pace even though I’m not. Also, unlike in track events, when I pass someone, I’ve noticed they don’t give much of a fight like I see in track. Anyway, I had a ton of fun at this race. I will definitely do it again!

…Continued from previous journal entry (October 4, 2010)…

The IronKids event was such a fun event. I want to do it again next year. Here are some pictures from the event. It went by really fast and I had a great time traveling with Dad.

Based on my performance at the San Diego Qualifier, I was supposed to come in around 38th place. I ended up taking 30th. An improvement! I had a blast and would love to do it again next year.

Heading to St. Petersburg, Florida!

Excerpts from my written journal (October 2, 2010)…

I have just left the San Diego airport and I am sitting on the Southwest airplane. We are way above the clouds. I ordered an apple juice and it tastes great! I am on my way to Florida to compete in the IronKids Nationals.

I am very excited and proud. My Dad is proud of me too. My mom is at a conference and my sister is at her friend’s house, so it’s just me and Dad.

(later..)

We are about to land in Phoenix and then take off on another plane. The next plane I board will take longer because it will go to Florida.

I have just boarded the next plane and it’s another Southwest plane. It’s going to be about five hours until we arrive. I can’t wait to land in Florida and see what it looks like!

I just ate some Ritz and chips ahoy cookies and boy, it was phenomenal! I had some apple juice also.

In about three hours, we will arrive in Florida.

I just finished a couple of courses in Mario Kart and I won almost all of them. I was Luigi for every single course. I played Figure 8 circuit, Yoshi Falls, Cheep Cheep Beach, Luigi’s Mansion, Dessert Hills, Delfino Square, Waluigi Pinball, Shroom Ridge, Mario Circuit 1, Moo Moo Farm, Peach Circuit, Luigi Circuit, Donut Plains 1, Frappe Snowland, Bowser Castle 2, and Baby Park.. in that order.

We will probably be in Florida in two hours and thirty minutes. When I get there, I will be begging for food!

I have just woken up from a LONG nap and there is about 45 more minutes until we land. Then, I’ll be in Florida!

Yay we are in Florida! I just got into our rental car and it is a silver Hyundai. We are driving across a lake on a bridge. My Dad got off at the wrong exit so now we’re headed to the right exit so we can find the hotel.

We have just arrived at the hotel.

to be continued…

Last month, I decided to enter a triathlon here in San Diego. It was the IronKids Triathlon. I had never done anything like it before. All I knew was that I love to run and I know how to swim and ride a bike… So I tried it. Wow, it was hard! I had so much fun and was surprised to find out that I had placed 4th which qualified me for Nationals. I guess I’m going to St. Petersburg, Florida in October!

Here is a clip from CBS about the events being held all around the country.
